The pilot explained why the plane's portholes have a rounded shape
This design was developed in the 50s.
An American Airlines pilot explained the sad truth about why all passenger plane portholes have rounded edges.
Captain Steve explained the dark science behind it on TikTok.
In a video to his 49,000 followers, he revealed that the design was developed in the 1950s after a series of disasters.
“Some airliners at the time were designed with square portholes, and in Europe, when the planes started to climb higher and needed more pressure, they discovered a problem. A lot of planes were lost in the air – they literally fell apart,” he added, explaining that this happened due to the fact that the square portholes created a “small crack” right along the edge.
