Climate change – NASA is sounding the alarm due to a significant reduction in fresh water supplies – UNIAN
The Earth's continents have entered a steadily drier phase.
Scientists have recorded a significant reduction in fresh water supplies on Earth.
As ScienceDaily writes, citing a report from scientists, satellite measurements from 2015 to 2023 showed that the average amount of fresh water on land and in underground aquifers was 1,200 cubic kilometers lower than it was from 2002 to 2014.
“That's two and a half times the volume of Lake Erie that was lost,” said Matthew Rodell, one of the study's authors and a hydrologist at NASA Goddard Space.
During droughts, farms and cities are forced to rely more on groundwater, which can lead to a cycle of diminishing groundwater supplies. So fresh water supplies are depleted and rain and snow cannot replenish them, so more groundwater is pumped.
