An 11,100-meter well is being drilled in China: what is known — World

The goal of the project is to study the internal structure of the Earth.

One of the deepest wells in the world, Shenditake 1, is being drilled in China, which, according to forecasts, should reach a depth of 11,100 meters. The project started in May 2023 in the Takla Makan Desert, located in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.

This was reported by the publication Unilad.

During 10 months, scientists were able to drill more than 10,000 meters using 1,000 drill pipes and 20 drill bits. However, after reaching the important milestone in March, drilling became not only technically difficult, but also dangerous. The temperature in the well exceeds 200°C, and the formation pressure reaches more than 130 MPa. High-strength building structures, for example, bridges, are usually created from concrete capable of withstanding loads of up to 41 MPa.
