When is St. Andrew's Day – date, traditions, prohibitions – UNIAN
Christians celebrate this important Orthodox holiday according to the new OCU calendar.
From September 1, 2023, the Orthodox believers of Ukraine, together with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, switched to a different calendar. Instead of the Gregorian calendar, Christians celebrate celebrations according to the New Julian calendar. Find out when to meet St. Andrew the First-Called now.
Why is the Day of St. Andrew the First-Called important for Ukraine?
The Apostle Andrew was a disciple of Christ – one of the twelve. It was him, as John writes in his Gospel, that the Savior called first, since Andrei was the first to recognize Christ as the Messiah. That is why he became the First-Called. In the Gospel of Matthew and Luke he is mentioned second after the Apostle Peter (Andrew's brother), and Mark in his scripture puts him in fourth place.
