18th-century gold coins stolen from sunken treasure ships

The collection of discovered coins is estimated to be worth more than $1 million.

Authorities in Florida have recovered gold coins stolen from the site of the 1715 wreck of Spanish treasure ships near Vero Beach, writes livescience.com.

Booty Salvage Inc., a firm hired to salvage artifacts from shipwrecks, reported only half of the historic coins they found, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

They announced that they had found 51 gold coins and 12.2 meters of gold chain, while withholding information about the other 50 coins they found. During the investigation, the FWC and FBI were able to recover 37 of the 50 coins that were stolen.
