“Earrings” or “balls”? How is it correct? After all, among Ukrainians you can hear both these words. It is noteworthy that “balls” are more often used by older women.

Linguist Oleksandr Avramenko explains that “balls” are a dialectic that is called earrings. This word is common in different regions of Ukraine. There is still an opinion that this word came from the Polish language.
Avramenko emphasizes that dialect words should not be used in scientific and business styles of speech.
“I often hear that regional words spoil the literary language, it's linguistic rubbish. No, friends, linguistic rubbish is rubbish,” the expert emphasized.
Instead, in business and scientific usage, the word “earrings” should be used to denote jewelry.
