South Korea's opposition has initiated impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Seok-yeol following a controversial martial law decision.
As Interfax reports, the Democratic Party, along with five other opposition forces, submitted a motion to remove the head of state from office at 2:43 p.m. local time (07:43 Kyiv time).
Voting in the parliament on this issue is scheduled for December 6-7. In order to approve the impeachment, it is necessary that it be supported by at least two-thirds of the deputies of the National Assembly, i.e. 200 out of 300.
The day before, Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law in the country, citing the threat of anti-government actions. However, a few hours after this decision, he lifted martial law with the government's consent.
