A recent study of the medical records of more than 1.2 million elderly patients in Southern California found a disturbing link between air pollution caused by wildfires and the risk of developing dementia.

Scientists have found that an increase in the level of fine PM2.5 particles, which are released during forest fires, can increase the probability of this disease by 18% within three years. In the absence of forest fires, PM2.5 particles increase the risk of developing serious diseases by only 1%.
