scientists have discovered a new danger that threatens millions of people – UNIAN
This can only be changed by stopping emissions into the air.
American scientists have discovered a link between air pollution caused by forest fires and the risk of developing dementia. This was discovered by examining the medical records of more than 1.2 million elderly patients. Thus, a poor environment is dangerous not only for lung health, but also for people’s minds, writes Boise State Public Radio.
The study, published in JAMA Neurology, focused on PM2.5 – fine particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. They found that for every additional microgram of PM2.5 from wildfires per cubic meter of air over three years, the likelihood of developing dementia increased by 18%. In the absence of wildfires, PM2.5 increased the risk by only 1%.
