Romania and Bulgaria will fully join the Schengen area from January 1, 2025. EU countries have decided to cancel checks on persons at the internal land borders with these two states.

The Minister of the Interior of Hungary, Sándor Pinter, welcomed Bulgaria and Romania as full members of the Schengen Agreement.
“It is a historic moment to finally welcome Bulgaria and Romania as full members of the Schengen Agreement. The abolition of checks on persons at the internal land borders with and between these member states was a top priority of the Hungarian presidency, and today we have made it a reality,” the minister said.
