Women in Iran could face the death penalty or up to 15 years in prison if they disobey new mandatory “morality laws” that take effect this week.

Under the new laws, those who “promote nudity, indecency, exposure or inappropriate clothing” face severe penalties. They include fines of more than $15,000, caning and prison terms of five to 15 years for repeat offenders.
Article 37 of the new law stipulates that promoting obscenity or “bad clothing” among foreign actors, including international media and civil society organizations, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
