The study showed that the Earth's rocks and underground reservoirs contain about 6.2 trillion tons of hydrogen — 26 times more than the remaining oil. However, the exact location of these reserves has not yet been determined.

The hydrogen reserves are probably too deep or far from the coast to be easily mined. Also, some of them may be too small to extract economically. However, Geoffrey Ellis, a petroleum geochemist with the US Geological Survey, believes that even with these limitations, there will be enough hydrogen to meet energy needs.
