Sleeping on your left side may even save your life.

People who sleep on their left side are healthier and have fewer digestive problems than those who sleep on their right side or back, says Ali Rezaei, a gastroenterologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. This was reported by YourTango.

According to the doctor, sleeping on your back is not advisable if you have breathing problems, and sleeping on your right side causes digestive disorders. “Several studies have shown that sleeping on the right side increases the number of episodes of acid reflux and heartburn compared to sleeping on the left side,” says Rezaei.

The doctor also said that the position of the head also affects digestive function during sleep: “elevating the head of the bed is associated with fewer episodes of reflux.”
