The European Union is investing 10.6 billion euros in a system of satellites that will provide encrypted global Internet communications.
Europe is seeking to build its own alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink, which has more than 6,000 satellites and serves customers in about 100 countries, Bloomberg reports.
The European Union has signed contracts to begin work on a multi-orbital network of 290 IRIS2 satellites, which should be fully operational by 2030. It can serve European governments and militaries as well as private clients.
