The fall of the Assad regime is a sensitive topic for Moscow.
On Monday, Russia televised the annual meeting of Russia's top leadership, chaired by dictator Vladimir Putin and his defense minister. Russian officials touched on topics from NATO and the war in Ukraine to mortgages for the military.
But one issue was neglected, namely the situation in Syria, where the Russian Federation maintained a military presence for years. The New York Times drew attention to this. The Russian dictator has still not made any public statements about the collapse of his ally, Bashar al-Assad.
“The silence underscores the uncertainty about the future of Russian military bases in Syria – and how the war in Ukraine has become the Kremlin's top priority,” the newspaper writes.
