Paleontologists have discovered what may be the earliest known saber-toothed animal, a predator that roamed our planet before the age of dinosaurs. As Newsweek writes, citing a study in the journal Nature Communications, the previously unknown prehistoric creature resembled a dog in appearance, although it had noticeable differences.
“It looked a little like a medium-sized dog, maybe the size of a husky… It didn't have hair, and it didn't have dog-like ears,” study co-author Ken Andjelczyk said in a press release.
According to Andzhelczyk, among the most distinctive features of this predator are a set of very long, blade-like fangs, which suggest that the animal was at one time a “top predator.”
