Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told European Union leaders he plans to wait until US President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated before extending sanctions against Russia. Bloomberg writes about this, citing its sources.

The EU has already introduced 15 packages of sanctions against Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine. They must be renewed every six months. The next extension is due before the end of January, just 11 days after Trump is scheduled to take the oath of office.

Extending sanctions requires unanimous support from 27 member states, which could allow Orban to veto it.
