The giant stone circle was a symbol of ancient British unity.

One of the great mysteries of the megalithic complex of Stonehenge, built in Wiltshire more than 5,000 years ago, was the origin of the giant stone slabs from which it was built. Builders are known to have brought them from as far as south-west Wales and north-east Scotland.

In an article published in Archeology International, scientists from University College London and Aberystwyth University suggest that the ancient Scots and Welsh brought their local stones to Wiltshire as a contribution to the symbol of British unity, the dailymail reports.

The authors believe that the builders of Stonehenge were trying to establish “political unification and a common identity over most or even all of Britain.”
