Manufacturers can voluntarily state the benefits of products on packages if they meet the FDA's updated criteria for “healthy” products.
The FDA noted that the labeling of “healthy” products will help consumers choose dietary products, and will encourage manufacturers to adapt the composition in accordance with the new criteria.
To qualify as “healthy,” a product must contain a minimum amount of food from one or more food groups, such as fruits, vegetables, or low-fat dairy products.
