In the city of Alkmaar, the Netherlands, during the construction of an underground container for garbage, a wooden shoe, which is about 500 years old, was discovered. This find is extremely rare, as wooden shoes are usually associated with rural populations rather than urban environments. Archaeologists believe that the shoe was made at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century. This is the first known instance of a birch shoe being found in the Netherlands, and it is one of only 44 wooden shoes found during archaeological excavations in the Netherlands and Belgium.
