In January, Beterbiev defeated WBC mandatory challenger Callum Smith by technical knockout in the seventh round in Birmingham, inflicting the first early defeat of his career. In October in Riyadh, Beterbiev defeated Dmitry Bivol by majority decision and became the absolute world light heavyweight champion.
