Presidential elections in Moldova: Maya Sandu and the diaspora won, but the real fight is still ahead
On Sunday, November 3, the second round of presidential elections took place in Moldova. According to the results of almost 100% of processed protocols, the current president of the country Maya Sandu with 55% defeated the candidate from the pro-Russian Socialist Party (the police force of the former president of the country, Putin's friend Igor Dodon) Alexander Stoyanoglo with 44.9% – the former prosecutor general, who is under investigation for corruption and abuse of power.
As during the first round on October 20, when the constitutional referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU was held at the same time, the process of counting votes made many nervous. Until the votes from overseas polling stations began to be counted, Stojanoglo was slightly ahead of Sandu. However, closer to midnight, the incumbent president pulled ahead, receiving 55% of support.
The gap turned out to be even bigger than many expected…
