A Russian surface-to-air missile was the cause of the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane in Aktau, Kazakhstan, on December 26.

According to the sources, the Russian missile was launched by flight 8432 during the aerial activity of drones over Grozny. Shrapnel struck passengers and crew when an explosion occurred next to the plane mid-flight.

Government sources told the publication that the damaged plane was not allowed to land at any of the Russian airports, despite the pilots' requests for an emergency landing. The aircraft was ordered to fly across the Caspian Sea to Aktau in Kazakhstan.
