The Indian state of Mizoram and some of its neighbors were devastated by famine in 1911. This happened again 48 years later in 1959 and again in 2007. The authorities in Mizoram have been recording cyclical famines that occur every almost 50 years for more than two centuries – since 1815. Every year it starts with the same phenomenon – bamboo blooms.
Although bamboo usually looks like a tree plant and can create entire forests, it is actually a grass.
