When a banana taped to a wall sold for $120,000 in 2019, social media erupted and the age-old debate about the meaning of art began. But Maurizio Cattelan's viral creation The Comedian proved to be a solid investment for one collector: one of three “editions” of the painting beat expectations and sold for $6.24 million at Sotheby's in New York on Nov. 20.

The auction house estimated the work in the range of $1 million to $1.5 million. Bidding started at $800,000.
At the time of the sale, auctioneer Oliver Barker called the work “iconic” and “subversive”, joking that selling a banana at auction was “words he never thought he would say”.
