A New York man discovered the remains of an Ice Age mastodon in his backyard near Scotchtown in Orange County.

He first noticed two teeth protruding from the soil behind the plant's leaves, which led to the discovery of several bones, including an entire jaw, according to a statement released by the New York State Museum.

“When I found the teeth and examined them in my hands, I realized that they were something special and decided to call the experts. I am excited that such an important find for the scientific community was made on our territory,” the resident said.
