Archaeologists in the Dutch city of Guerlen found evidence of the existence of a Roman settlement, including a burial with the remains of a Roman soldier. This indicates the presence of the Romans in this region.

Guerlen, a city and municipality in the south-east of the Netherlands, has deep historical roots dating back to Roman times. In the 1st century AD there are. the Romans founded the settlement of Coriovallum here, located at the crossroads of two important Roman roads: one leading from Cologne to Bologna, and the other from Xanten to Trier via Guerlain and Aachen.
By the middle of the 1st century AD. there are. this settlement turned into a significant Roman center. However, in the III-IV centuries, Coriovallum fell into disrepair, when a late Roman fort was built. Already in the 5th century, the settlement was finally abandoned.
