A tiny fossil of an ancient insect was discovered in New Zealand – UNIAN

Paleontologists have discovered extremely rare tiny fossils that shed light on New Zealand's past. They belong to whiteflies, a type of insect that has been around for millions of years.

Researchers from the University of Otago found these rare fossils in Miocene-era crater lake sediments at Hindon Maar near Dunedin, New Zealand, writes Interesting Engineering.

It is noted that the amazing preservation of these fossils makes this discovery truly unusual.

“The discovery of these tiny fossils tells us that this group of insects has been present in New Zealand for at least 15 million years,” said Daphne Lee, co-author of the study whose findings were
