An asteroid collided with the Earth a few hours after its discovery – Science and IT
The asteroid entered the atmosphere a few hours after detection
In October 2024, asteroid 2024 UQ entered Earth's atmosphere just hours after it was discovered by scientists.
This was reported by Space.com.
The small space object, 1 to 2 meters in diameter, was captured on October 22 by the Hawaiian ATLAS telescope system. However, due to the short period of time between detection and its fall to Earth, monitoring systems did not have time to warn about the threat in time.
Two hours after discovery, the asteroid burned up upon re-entry over the Pacific Ocean, near California. Flares from the burning of the asteroid were recorded by US meteorological satellites and NASA projects, which allowed scientists to confirm the collision and calculate the trajectory of the object.
