Assad in Moscow: Russia granted him political asylum
Assad was Russia's staunchest ally in the Middle East. The Kremlin has invested huge sums in it.
The decision to grant asylum to the president of Syria Bashar Assad and his family in Russia was approved personally by Vladimir Putin.
This was stated by Kremlin Speaker Dmytro Peskov.
Putin's press secretary did not respond to a question about when Putin last met and spoke with Assad, but added that there is currently no meeting with him on Putin's official schedule.
