RR Auction in the UK is selling a unique exhibit – the Gilbert U-238 miniature nuclear laboratory with real radioactive uranium.

This unusual set was designed by scientist Alfred Carlton Gilbert as an “educational toy for budding child scientists.” Almost 5,000 such laboratories were produced in a few years. The kit included tools for experiments: a cloud chamber, a Geiger counter, a spintariscope, an electroscope, samples of uranium-bearing ores, and even a guide to finding uranium. All this was compactly packed in a metal case in the form of a suitcase. At the time of production in 1950, the set cost 50 US dollars, which today, taking into account inflation, equals 620 dollars or about 26 thousand hryvnias.
