Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ordered the army to withdraw all forces to Damascus to protect the capital from rebels. In his latest desperate attempt to hold on to power, Assad is trying to mend relations with the United States and President-elect Donald Trump through diplomatic intermediaries.

The publication notes that Assad, in fact, “ceded” most of the country to the rebels, who launched a rapid offensive in a few days and captured the large cities of Aleppo and Hama. Today, battles are already taking place on the streets of Homs, and rebel units are separated from Damascus by only 30 km.
