Archaeologists have discovered a limestone sarcophagus in the Church of St. Nicholas in Demre, Turkey. According to experts, this is the burial place of the Greek bishop St. Nicholas, who played a major role in the legend of Santa Claus.

According to Interesting Engineering, this find is part of a project called “Future Heritage” initiated by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The leader is Associate Professor Ebra Fatma Findik.

The length of the sarcophagus is about 2 meters. It was buried at a depth of 1.5-2 meters underground. The stone coffin had a raised lid and a pitched roof.
