Tomorrow, December 5, in the Orthodox calendar the day of the memory of Saint Sava the Consecrated. Sava was born in 439 in the village of Mutalaska, near Cappadocia (modern Turkey), in a Christian family. At the age of 8, he left his parents' home and entered the Flavian monastery. At an early age, he showed an extraordinary desire for prayer, fasting and self-denial.
At the age of 17, he went to Palestine to study with great ascetics. He spent some time in the monastery of Theoktista in the desert, where he was engaged in monastic affairs and gradually developed the skills of spiritual life. Later, he became a hermit, living in a secluded cave near the monastery.
