“Doomsday fish” returned to the shores of California for the third time in a year (photo) – UNIAN
Japanese mythology attributes shallow-water appearances of deep-sea belterfish as harbingers of earthquakes and tsunamis.
The elusive deep-sea beltfish, considered a harbinger of bad news, has been spotted again off the coast of California. This was the third sighting of the species in the state in the last three months and only the 22nd in the last century.
The nearly three-meter-long strapfish was found on the shores of Grandview Beach by Alison Laferriere of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The dead specimen was then recovered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service and taken to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, CNN writes.
