How many blood types do dogs have, and which breeds have the rarest group?
In dogs, the blood type is determined by genes, journalists noted.
Dogs have about 12 blood types, but six of them are the most clinically important. The blood types in dogs are called Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) 1.1, 1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Dal, Kai-1 and Kai-2. Dogs can be positive or negative for these antigens, such as DEA 4- or DEA 4+.
Some dog breeds have the relatively rare blood type DEA 1.1 negative – it is considered universal and safe for transfusion to most dogs that need such a procedure, writes dogster. The information published by the publication was checked by veterinarian Dr. Lorna Whittemore.
