How to correctly write the names of holidays in Ukrainian

When we talk about holidays, sometimes we think about how to write them correctly – with a capital letter or a small letter.
Linguist Oleksandr Avramenko explained how the names of holidays are written. The spelling of holiday names depends on the “scale”. If it is a private holiday, then you need to write with a lowercase letter. For example, when you want to wish someone a happy birthday.
“Private holidays are written with a lowercase letter, for example, a birthday. But with public holidays, it's different,” he noted.
The expert added that if the name consists of two or more words, only the first word should be capitalized. For example:
- New year
- Teacher's Day
- Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation
