A group of marriage agencies in China has come under police scrutiny for conning single men out of large sums of money by introducing them to “potential brides” who were actually part of a fraudulent scheme.

According to the investigation, some “grooms” managed to “earn” up to 300,000 yuan ($42,000) in just a few months.
According to a statement from a court in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, released in September this year, the Huaoyuan District Police Station has registered 180 claims of marriage agency fraud since last March. During this period, the court heard 50 cases related to substantial fees paid by clients to marriage agents for matching couples.
