The leader of the gang, Monelle “Mikano” Felix, began to suspect that his child, who died on December 7, was harmed by witchcraft. The reason for these suspicions was Felix's appeal to a voodoo priest for advice because of the child's illness. A priest accused a group of elderly people of allegedly harming a child with magic. As a result, Felix ordered a massacre that resulted in the death of at least 110 people.
