From March 2023 to March 2024, the Japanese authorities recorded a record 219 attacks on people, in six cases the encounter with a bear was fatal for a person. In the same 12 months, Japanese hunters killed more than 9,000 black and brown bears.
How many bears in Japan
Two types of bears attack people and livestock:
- Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) – height 120-140 cm, weight 40-130 kg;
- Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis) – height 150-230 cm, weight 120-400 kg.
