Killer whales started wearing 'hats' made from dead salmon after giving it up 37 years ago

One of the assumptions of killer whale researchers is that the fashion for salmon hats is associated with the high availability of food.

Orcas in the Northwest Pacific have started wearing “salmon hats” again, bringing back a bizarre trend first described in the 1980s, researchers say.

Last month, scientists and whale watchers spotted orcas in South Puget Sound and off Point Nu Point in Washington state swimming with dead fish on their heads, Live Science reports.

It is noted that this is the first time they have donned the fancy headdress since the summer of 1987, when a fashionable female West Coast orca began the behavior for no apparent reason. According to the charity…
