Kirov streets could be given back their historical names: what do historians, urbanists and the mayor of the city think about the upcoming changes?
On November 26 in Kirov, at the council on toponymy (names of geographical names) they considered the issues of renaming the following streets: Volodarsky to Nikitskaya, Uritsky to Uspenskaya, Rosa Luxemburg to Morozovskaya, Derendyaeva to Vsesvyatskaya, MOPR to Ostrozhnaya, Maklina to Butyrskaya, Karla Marx – to Vladimirskaya. A group of deputies of the Kirov City Duma made a proposal.
Council members also supported the renaming of Karl Liebknecht Street to Defenders of the Fatherland Street. The Russian Union of Afghanistan Veterans and Special Military Operations came up with this proposal. It is proposed to name Gorbachev Street after the children's writer Albert Likhanov.
The mayor's office noted that in case of renaming, citizens living on these streets will not need to make changes to their passports.
