In December 2024, WhatsApp was included in the list of organizers of information dissemination, which raised concerns about the possible blocking of the messenger in Russia.

On December 19, 2024, Roskomnadzor included WhatsApp in the register of information dissemination organizers. The department explained that services that are on this list are required to store user data and provide it to the FSB. Besides WhatsApp, KakaoTalk, Element, Skype and Wire were also included in the registry.

Telegram channel INSIDER-T reports that WhatsApp is expected to be blocked in the near future, since the messenger does not transmit data to the FSB. Volunteer Roman Alekhin also believes that WhatsApp will be blocked if it does not comply with the requirements of Roskomnadzor. Blogger Yuriy Podolyaka is confident that the messenger will not comply with the requirements, which will lead to its blocking.
