He was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the author of one of the four canonical Gospels, which bears his name. Matthew was born in Galilee in a Jewish family. His parents were probably wealthy as he worked as a customs official. He lived in Capernaum, a city that became important for Jesus' ministry.
