The number of children born in the EU reached a record low in 2023. This underlines the seriousness of the region's demographic problems, reports the Financial Times.
According to data updated last month, 3,665,000 children were born in 27 EU member states in 2023, journalists shared. It is noted that this is the lowest figure since 1961.
The EU birth rate is 5.5% lower than in 2022. This is the largest annual decline in the entire history of observations, the publication emphasized.
Also, the 2023 figure was lower than Eurostat's long-term demographic forecast, according to which 4 million children were to be born in the region.
