Real negotiations with the Russian Federation are unreal: the US ambassador in Moscow warned the West against illusions
A dialogue with the Russians is necessary, but in no case can it be considered negotiations.
Negotiations between the parties to the conflict, as they are understood in the West, involve trust, honesty and the search for compromises. With Putin and the Kremlin, this will never be possible.
This was stated by the former US ambassador to Moscow in 2019-2022, an experienced diplomat, John Sullivan, in a comment for the BBC.
“Understand me correctly. We need a dialogue with the Russians, and what is important is to listen to what they tell us. But this cannot be called negotiations! What does Putin say, what compromises is he ready to make? No! He will never make on concessions regarding his declared military goals, i.e. “denazification and demilitarization” of Ukraine.
