Several factors influenced the mortarman's decision to return.
A 24-year-old mortarman from the 93rd Mechanized Brigade “Kholodny Yar” Sergei with the call sign “Gera” frankly spoke about why he left his unit without permission last year and returned to the army even before the adoption of the law on voluntary return to service after desertion.
As the UP writes, according to the soldier, he felt that he was very exhausted, and the last straw was the commander’s order to drive into a position almost close to the enemy:
“Even if you storm with a mortar, don’t give a damn – you have to take that firing position. And then I went up to the battalion commander, said that I was going to the SOC, handed over my weapons and went home.”
