A Chinese doctor has been condemned online after he tried to cure his girlfriend's insomnia by administering anesthesia more than 20 times over six hours, which tragically led to her death.

The doctor, identified only by his surname Qiu, works as an anesthesiologist at an unnamed hospital in Jiajiang County, Sichuan Province. He met the victim, surnamed Chen, a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company, through an online dating platform in the summer of 2022. After the pair began a romantic relationship, Chen often asked Qiu to inject her with propofol, a major anesthetic, to relieve her insomnia from September 2023 to March 2024, when the tragedy occurred.
