A man who underwent the world's first successful face transplant and hands, announced the engagement.

Six years ago, Joe DiMeo's life changed forever when he fell asleep behind the wheel of his Dodge Challenger at the end of his night shift in July 2018, causing his car to crash into a curb and subsequently catch fire.

Fortunately, two heroic bystanders were able to rescue DiMeo from the car, but he was left with life-changing injuries from the crash.

DiMeo suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body and was placed in a medically induced coma before having his fingertips amputated and undergoing more than 20 reconstructive surgeries.
