The PS3 generation turned out to be the most difficult for the company.

The Playstation 3 generation is considered the most difficult for Sony. After the super-successful Playstation 2, the company had to outdo itself, but already at release the console faced serious problems: overpriced, lack of games at launch, and difficulties for developers when creating new games.

Former Playstation Studios director Sean Layden told Eurogamer that the company was lucky to survive the PS3 at all. According to the businessman, Sony was Icarus, which flew too close to the Sun. The PS3 was supposed to be a Linux-powered supercomputer that could do absolutely everything. This approach almost ruined the company:

“We flew too close to the sun and miraculously survived it, but the experience taught us a lot.”
